VPN
VPN is a technology that creates a safe and encrypted point-to-point connection over insecure networks. This technology is able to create a secure link between branch and a main office. Besides that VPN also enables mobile/remote users to dial into the VPN server, allowing them to access critical resources in the corporate network securely. Remote users are required to authenticate themselves before gaining access to VPN server. The 2 types of VPN’s are Remote Access and Site-to-site.

What is MPLS?

One has to understand how IP routing on the internet works before understanding how MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching) works. An IP packet transmitted over the internet carries no information except for the destination IP address. There isn’t any instruction on how a packet should traverse to its destination therefore internet routers have to perform independent routing decisions based on the packet’s network-layer header.

This process is repeated at every hop till the packet reaches its destination resulting in poor performances for time sensitive applications such as video conferencing or VoIP (voice over IP)

MPLS addresses IP routing’s weakness by establishing pre-determined, highly efficient routes.The benefits of MPLS are performance, better bandwidth utilization, reduced network congestion and a better end-user experience. The cost to subscribe these services however, can be very high.
